Karadashli Asmalyk,
West Turkestan, c. 76 x 137 cm, mid-19th century, asmalyks were always made in pairs and mostly characterised by a white ground, with pointed top and bottom tassels, and were used as flank decoration for the bridal camel. The field design often consists of a grid with ashik patterns and variously arranged erre guls as core motifs. Their characteristic features provide an indication of the object’s age. The present asmalyk has been manufactured with wool and cotton wefts and displays a very rare border decoration. With its large format and beautiful age patina, this asmalyk is a very valuable collector’s piece.
