Marten Ryckaert was the most important master in Antwerp to cater to the strong demand for Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel-like landscapes.
Paintings by Marten Ryckaert are rarely signed and/or dated and only a few dated examples are known, ranging from 1615 to 1625. On stylistic grounds, a date during the 1610s is feasible for the present painting.
