Jan van Dalen
(Brussels? before 1610 – after 1653)
Bacchus with a filled glass of wine,
oil on canvas, 90 x 70 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium
The present painting is a rare work by Jan van Dalen. Another version of this composition, signed and dated 1648, is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna and another composition of Bacchus is in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest.
The artist remains something of an enigma to modern scholarship, but he is believed to have been in Rome in 1630-31. There he would have been able to observe both the portrayals of Bacchus by Caravaggio, as well as the Bacchic rituals of the Bentvueghels - the notorious Dutch-speaking colony of painters - performed at the Church of Santa Constanza.
Between 1632 and 1670 van Dalen was active in Antwerp, and he appears to have absorbed some of the characteristic features of Caravaggio’s style. Two other major works by the artist are known, a Tambourine Player in the Michelis Collection, Cape Town, and an Allegory of the Four Elements sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, 18 October 2016.
