The present composition of Hercules and Omphale relates to the fresco of the same subject which Dorigny painted for the salone of the Palazzo Cavalli alle Porte Contarine in Padua.
This painting can also be compared with an oval overdoor representing Tarquin and Lucretia, which is conserved in the Albergo Due Torri in Verona and dated to around 1705-1710 (see M. Favilla, R. Rugolo, La scimmia di Louis Dorigny, in: Verona illustrata, 2014, vol. no. 27, pp. 60-61, pl. III, fig. 29).
Hercules, who at the command of the Oracle of Delphi was condemned to serve Omphale, queen of Lydia, as a slave, is depicted spinning wool at the queen’s feet while she rests on his club and wears his lion skins.
