Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens

Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
The Tiger, Lion and Leopard hunt,
oil on canvas, 203 x 258 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium

The present painting is one of several workshop variants of The Lion, Tiger and Leopard Hunt devised by Peter Paul Rubens. While designs for large-scale hunting scenes were traditionally commissioned from artists in the Low Countries for tapestry manufacture, the prohibitive expense of such a medium led Rubens to reconceive such pieces as worthy compositions in their own right, thereby creating a market for a new format of painting in which he and his studio were immediately the leading practitioners. According to Max Rooses (see Rubens – Sa vie et ses oeuvres, 1900, I, p. 263), Rubens considered them ‘decorative paintings in which he had a great part carried out by others while he confined himself to retouching’, and the present painting is no exception. An earlier version is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes (1615/16).
