Barend van der Meer was the son of the landscape painter Jan Veermer van Haarlem; he was a pupil of the painter Juriaen van Streeck. The works of van der Meer reflect the instruction of his master, but above all of Willem Kalf. Van der Meer is considered as among the last great Dutch seventeenth century masters of still-life painting active in Amsterdam.

In the Lexikon der holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert van der Meer’s still lifes are described as follows: ‘In comparison to the compositions by Kalf and van Sreeck, van der Meer’s still lifes have the effect of a magnificent array, indeed, a display of treasures. Van der Meer (juxtaposes) a multitude of table objects deliberately, one against the other, differing clearly one from the other in their magnificence’.
