A unique glass object, “Nautilus III”, designed and manufactured by Andrej Jakab
1998, construction reduced to basic geometric shapes, with triangular base, made of transparent, optical glass, facetted, polished and gold tinted. A lens with a c. 14 cm diameter is cut on the front of the object at c. 10 cm from the bottom. On the entire left side, the gold-coloured shimmering optical glass has been replaced with clear optical glass measuring 5 x 5 x 7 cm. As a result, light produces different effects depending on its angle of incidence. Signed: ‘A. Jakab ‘98’. Dimensions: height c. 47 cm, base c. 20 cm 14 cm x 14 cm.
A unique piece.
The Slovak glass artist Andrej Jakab was born in 1950 and is one of the most influential craftsmen who have shaped glass art in Eastern Europe and thus the whole of modernist glass art. In his work, he shows how extraordinarily varied the possibilities of polished optical glass can be. His objects are characterised by the interaction of light and colour. His oeuvre is an impressive testimony to his individual craftsmanship and his command of this difficult and laborious technique.
