(Düsseldorf 1801–1874 Bad Reichenhall)
A summer excursion to the sea, signed, indistinctly dated K. Hess 1840 (?), oil on canvas, 65 x 85.5 cm, framed, damaged, small areas with missing colour, (Rei)
Provenance:
Private Collection Australia
Carl von Hess was originally to be trained in copper engraving and etching, at his father’s request. However, he recognised his true passion for landscape painting at an early age and changed courses to study this subject at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1818. In 1838, he finally undertook a journey to Constantinople, which led him to design a series of oriental genre scenes. Thus, we also owe the present lot to the inspiration he gained on this journey. The summer excursion to the sea, as depicted here in strong colours, can be judged with the same words as provided about Hess’s painting in general: “These ‘old men’, …] still drew with colour and also included a sense of ‘historical’ seriousness in their genre pictures; truth and simplicity were more important to them than gimmickry and ingenious affectation”. (Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie 12, Munich 1880, p. 298)
