(Lombardy, active in the second half of the 15th century)
Adoration of the Child,
tempera and gold on panel, 80 x 52 cm, in a tabernacle frame with the Sforza da Cotignola coat-of-arms
Provenance:
Collection of Alfred Ramè (1826–1886), Rennes;
with Galerie Giroux, Brussels, 1921;
Private collection, Switzerland
The coat-of-arms shows the Imperial Eagle squared with the Lion rampant with a quince: the device of the Sforza da Cotignola. The absence of the snake points to its commission from a branch of the Sforza family other than the Dukes of Milan. Indeed, the present coat-of-arms is that of the Sforza Lords in Pesaro (see the carved capital with the Sforza coat-of-arms in the Rocca Costanzo at Pesaro).
This is a rare painting that exemplifies the so-called ‘civiltà degli ori’ [‘golden civilisation’] of Lombardy. It is executed with the finesse of a miniaturist and stylistic elegance similar to that found in incised glass altars. It reveals clear stylistic parallels to the panels painted by Stefano de’ Fedeli, now in the Museo del Duomo di Monza.
