Juno, Cupid and Venus (?),
oil on panel, 66 x 84 cm, framed
Provenance:
Federico Zeri collection, Mentana (Rome);
Private European collection
We are grateful to Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann for tentatively attributing the present work to Lambert Suavius on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
The present painting is probably by an artist from the region of the Low Countries. The smooth and ideal facial features of the women, the almost classical profile, and marmoreal treatment of flesh recalls that of Flemish artists in Italy who copied or were inspired by Raphael.
Lambert Suavius (1510-1567) was an artist from Liège, and brother-in-law of the better-known Lambert Lombard. Probably Suavius was in Rome, even though documentary sources do not record a journey to Italy, where he would have seen works by Raphael and his workshop directly; it has often been suggested because of the strong classical character apparent in his works.
