My criteria for criticism when viewing my works are characterised more by the approach of an abstract painter than of a figurative painter: the relationship of the object to space, to the surface, the flow of colour, of line to surface, are all more important to me than the narrative of a picture. The object, the figure, the representation provide my motivation to paint. I couldn’t paint an abstract picture. I wouldn’t know where to start. I would have no point of purchase. The reason I always paint Precy is because I like her and find great pleasure in painting her. As I paint her, however, it is more important to me that the colour is right, that the line flows, than that the similarity to her is exact. So I don’t paint portraits of her.
