Edmund Adler, who is known for his child portraits, often depicted dogs in his works. In rural interiors, a dog usually stands in the doorway or next to the children, watching them play. Dogs move more into the focus in paintings featuring single children. In the present work, the girl in a green skirt with red stockings tenderly holds the puppies in her arms. There is a bowl with food on the floor. A comparable picture, showing the same girl with two puppies in her arms and another dog in the foreground, was offered at Dorotheum Vienna on 22 June 1982 (lot 482). The work will be included in the Edmund Adler Archive in Vienna by Barbara Hagerty (formerly Kremser).
