The present painting is based on Van Loo’s portrait of the Duchess in the Museo Fondazione Cariparma in Parma. Louise Elisabeth was a daughter of Louis XV, King of France, and his wife Maria Leszczynska. Since 1739 she was married to the Spanish Infant Philippe who was made Duke of Parma in 1748.
