A Wunda aboriginal shield.
Wood and ochres 75 cm 19th century. Wunda shields were used in fighting, protecting against spears and boomerangs. More importantly, they were carried by performers in ritual contexts, especially when calling on epic stories episodes from 'the Dreaming'. The zigzag lines refer to rain or floodwaters, the unusual yellow lozenges shapes geographical indication. A private Viennese collection. (VJ)
