Iran, c. 194 x 145 cm, 19th century. A unique pictorial carpet from the Feraghan region depicting bizarre mythical creatures, lizards and dragons with wide open mouths. In the highly symbolic culture of Persia, the lizard and the dragon represented “good” and “evil” respectively. In the centre of the carpet is a royal crown guarded by two sword-carrying lions on either side. This extremely valuable carpet was manufactured in a Turkish knot with blue cotton wefts. It displays a velvety, shiny pile, and selvedges wrapped in aubergine-coloured silk. Good condition. One corner has been filled in. A collector’s carpet. (VP)
