Ando Hiroshige

Ando Hiroshige - Starožitnosti

(Japan 1797-1858) Hamamatsu (left of series title), "fuyugare no zu" (winter scene, in red cartouche), from the series: "Tôkaidô gojusan tsugi no uchi" (The 53 Stations of the Tôkaidô, left of the smoke), signature at the upper right of the sheet: "Hiroshige ga", publisher’s seal: "Hoeidô" (in red below the signature). This sheet is part of the so-called Hoeidô-Tôkaidô, one of the series that made Hiroshige famous. According to Gordon Friese (20 November 2019), the present work was printed from the original woodblocks (the red cartouche in the upper left corner of the image displays a fracture on its right side, and all lines are in keeping with undisputedly attributed prints of the original woodblocks). The outer margin of the sheet has been severely trimmed, as a result of which the censor seal kiwame, which was located in the outer margin on the left, has been lost. The green is heavily faded. Unprinted areas are visible between the colour borders, which is an indicator of a later print. A stain in the sheet at lower left, a vertical centrefold is also discernible, compare sheet no. 11.41838, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. We are grateful to Gordon Friese for his expertise concerning this coloured woodblock print, 21.7 x 32.2 cm, minimally attached on support, mounted, framed, (CT)
