A Rare Pair of Neo-Classical Chests of Drawers,
Vienna c. 1800, mahogany veneered softwood and hardwood frames with slanted lesenes, on tetragonal feet of conical form, each with 1 small and 2 large drawers, fire-gilt bronze mounts and brass fillet decoration, each c. 92 x 125 x 59 cm, several wood and veneer parts missing, occasional cracks, partly with heavy signs of age and use, unaltered original condition. (DOC)
Provenance:
from Austrian aristocratic ownership.
This pair of chests of drawers probably belonged to the original inventory of Karlslust Castle in Lower Austria. A striking similarity with the execution of these chests is clearly visible in the illustrations of “Innenräume und Hausrat der Empire- und Biedermeierzeit in Österreich - Ungarn”, published by J. Folnesics in 1922. Furthermore, the fire-gilt fittings of a fall-front desk illustrated in the aforementioned publication are a sure indication of the origin of this pair of chests.
Lit.:
Josef Folnesics, Innenräume und Hausrat der Empire- und Biedermeierzeit in Österreich-Ungarn, plates 38 and 41, Kunstverlag Anton Schroll & Co., Vienna, 1922
