Paulus Moreelse started his artistic career as a pupil of Michiel van Mierevelt and was a highly talented portrait painter. His portraits of children are among his best works, but he was also an erudite history painter and the inventor of arcadian shepherd and shepherdess compositions. A comparable painting, dated 1630, is in the collection of the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see I. Linnik, Y. Kuznetsov, Dutch Painting in Soviet Museums, Amsterdam [et. al.] 1982 no. 29, ill.).
