Jehiryusai Hiroshige
(1797-1858) Fukagawa Susaki Jumantsubo (Jūmantsubo Plain at Fukagawa Susaki), from the series: "Meisho Edo hyakkei" (Hundred Views of Edo, sheet title left near the series title cartouche in square cartouche), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signature:" Hiroshige ga, censor seal (left outer margin at top, round): aratame, date seal (under the censor seal, oval): snake 4 (1857), publisher’s seal (lower left): Shitaya Uoya Eikichi. The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. In Gordon Friese’s opinion, the present sheet made available to him as a photograph was printed from the original woodblocks (a wood grain can be seen in the sky, which also occurs in original prints). Black lacquer is missing from the claws in the present sheet. The colours have faded. In the water on the left the bokashi is slightly smudged. In the upper section, slight colour defects are detectable (left of the claws, left of the signature, in the wings). The sheet displays almost full margins. The print is of still decent quality. For comparison with the first impression see: Philadelphia Museum of Art No. 1959-93-5. (certificate by Gordon Friese, Dortmund, 22 July 2020), attached to support, 35.7x 24.1 cm, mounted,(CT)
