Provenance:
Private property, Austria.
The present drawing is a design for the engraving of “Saint Justine” (Hollstein 958) from the series “Speculum Pudicitiae” (Mirror of Chastity). The complete series comprising 18 engravings was executed in the workshop of Sadeler after designs by Marten de Vos between 1584–87. The present drawing was not known by Hollstein as opposed to the drawings for the engravings of Anastasia (No. 949), Catherine (Nr. 953), Eufemia (Nr. 956), Lucia (Nr. 959) and Priscia (Nr. 962). The inscription at the lower margin of the sheet “S Justina” may have been added by a later hand. Three other stylistically comparable drawings by Marten de Vos, which were executed at about the same time in 1585, 1586 and in 1589 are kept in the Albertina in Vienna (Inv. 7925, 7929 and 7930).
