designed c. 1800, attributed to Karl Friedrich Schinkel, produced by Werner & Mieth, bronze cast, dark patinated and fire-gilt, three-sided foot with lion paws on triangular base, elegant stem with drip guard and candle socket, height c. 90 cm, on the underside of the base a brass plaquette with P 1259, inventory no. St. E. 4423, slight traces of usage. (DOC)
Provenance:
Schloss St. Emmeram in Regensburg, ancestral seat of the Thurn und Taxis Family, Sotheby's Regensburg “The Thurn und Taxis Princely Collection”, October 1993, lot 382, Private Collection of Reinhold Hofstätter (Palais Strudlhof), Private Collection Vienna
The present candelabrum is one of several pieces produced by the renowned Berlin company Werner & Mieth. In keeping with the firm’s commitment to eschew serial production, all pieces show slight variations. Unlike these, French objects were mainly mass-produced, as Schinkel himself remarked critically in 1817: “...I find this stiff junk very unfortunate, and it replicates itself so horribly”.
