We are grateful to Margret Klinge for endorsing the attribution of the present painting to David Teniers II after examination of the original. She dates it into the late 1650s. A written certificate (September 2020) is available.
Klinge writes: ‘This pastoral landscape by David Teniers the Younger, dating from the late 1650s, can be assigned to the artist’s courtly Brussels period. The wide expanse of the landscape, with its meandering river and green banks and the sky high above, has been captured with a lot of atmosphere. Shepherds tend their flocks on the hills and mountain slope in the warm light of the far-reaching rays of the sun, which as such is obscured by a dark rain cloud. Images of a peaceful life in the country, such pastoral themes enjoyed great popularity.’
