Many international art institutions have already paid tribute to the work of Herbert Brandl. At the documenta IX in Kassel in 1992, his paintings were exhibited next to the room dedicated to Gerhard Richter, the most respected painter of our epoch. Most young painters would have found it difficult to accept, and live up to, this comparison.
However, Herbert Brandl’s paintings have always been remarkably free of art historical influences. Juxtaposing Brandl and Richter was an interesting feature of documenta IX aiming to display two conceptions of the relationship between painting and media and also two generations. Herbert Brandl was one of the artists who founded “direct painting” in the 1980s and 1990s.
