Provenance:
Estate of the artist, Kitzbühel
Private Collection, Tyrol
Literature:
cf. Alfons Walde, exhibition catalogue, Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum Innsbruck, 1976, cat. no. 45, ill. p. 16
Alfons Walde’s first model was his sister Berta, with whom he had a close relationship throughout his life. She served him as an early model for his examination of the female figure. Typical of Walde’s style before 1920 is the combination of expressive colour with a linear flatness adopted as early as that time of the Vienna Secession. Late secessionist symbolism echoes in the composition when one considers how the figure, frontally positioned in the centre of the picture, is surrounded by an implied starry nimbus of red colour fields. The woman becomes – so to speak – an apparition, a dream image, luring the viewer with a smile, beckoning with outstretched arms.
