An exceptional Bembe helmet mask,
R. d. Congo. Wood, 49 cm high. These impressive Janus masks of the Bembe alunga society, would have been crowned with a headdress of feathers and porcupine quills, and worn to celebrate the return of the initiates. (VJ)
