Jan Thomas van Yperen is mentioned by Cornelis de Bie as one of Peter Paul Rubens’s last pupils and the artist is thought to have collaborated with Rubens on the large-scale decorations for the Philip IV’s hunting lodge of Torre de la Parada (1636–1638). Commissioned also by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, governor of the Spanish Netherlands, and whose collection now forms the core of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, van Yperen followed his patron to Austria, where he painted for the Imperial court.
