A view of the river Ij with the Schreiertoren, Amsterdam,
oil on canvas, 55 x 71 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, France
The Schreierstoren, situated on the corner of the Prins Hendrikkade and the Geldersekade at the IJ in Amsterdam, was built in 1487 and once formed part of the city wall. It served as an observation and defense tower. Its name derives from the Dutch word ‘schreef’ or ‘hooked’ as at the tower the wall continued at an angle. Later the tower was associated with the tears shed by the women who had to say goodbye to their husbands when leaving on their journeys to the East.
