The present drawing goes back to a bronze statue of Hercules of the 2nd century B.C. in the Musei Capitolini, Rome (Inv. MC1265). The statue was found between 1471 and 1484 in the Forum Boarium during the pontificate of Pope Sixtus IV. It was erected presumably in the center of a Greek circular temple. The proportions of the statue and the heavy modelling of the body are based on Greek models of the 4th century B.C. and may have been inspired by works of the Lysippos.
