Nicolas Antoine Taunay

When he was 13 years old Nicolas Antoine Taunay entered the studio of Nicolas-Bernard Lepicié and later studied with Nicolas-Guy Brenet and Francesco Giuseppe Casanova. Taunay specialized in painting landscapes and executed several landscape studies in the forests of St. Germain und Fontainebleau. In 1784 he was granted a stipend and lived in Rome for three years; from 1787 on he regularly exhibited at the Salon. In 1805 the artist painted scenes of Napoleon’s campaigns in Germany, in 1806/07 he was active for the porcelain manufacture in Sèvres. In 1821 he sojourned in Brazil within a small artists’ community and participated in the transformation of the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rio de Janeiro into an Academy.
