A storage unit on castors, designed by Otto Niedermoser * - Design

c. 1930, manufactured by Helmut Niedermoser, Austria, walnut veneered wooden corpus, red lacquered shelves, on bakelite rolls, height 60 cm, width 60 cm, depth 28 cm and 38 cm. (DRAX)

A unique piece.

Custom-made for Fritz Frey’s “bachelor’s study” in Klosterneuburg near Vienna.

Provenance:
Fritz Frey, Klosterneuburg, Austria; Konrad Frey, Graz, Austria; uninterrupted family ownership

The present design is based on the idea of a multifunctional piece of furniture that can be moved around freely. This rare occasional furniture object, which can be used in various ways, turns out to be a highly innovative and future-oriented solution, given the time when it was created. Architect Otto Niedermoser is one of the pioneers of Viennese modernism. The present item was either made while he was still a student at the Vienna Academy under Peter Behrens or during his time as an assistant to Carl Witzmann. In this period, he was also involved in the commission of building two houses for the Vienna Werkbund housing estate. Later on, Niedermoser was successful as a stage and production designer.
