in 1932, for the Hollandse Patent Metaal Industri Hopmi, coated metal and wood folding construction, height approx. 90 cm, width approx. 57 cm, depth approx. 45 cm/55 cm, height of seat approx. 38 cm. (MHA)
Originally, Gerrit Rietveld designed, among others, a chair for the Vreeburg Cinema in Utrecht, he and his family living above the cinema. Herman Frederik Mertens modified Gerrit Rietveld’s design for the Vreeburg Cinema: he replaced the seat and backrest by his own versions and added the armrests. Eventually, the chair was realised in collaboration with UMS (subsequently Pastoe) and Hopmi, a company producing bicycle parts and whose patented torpedo bolts were used.
