“Perhaps more important even than the fireplace in the history of domestic architecture, the dining table is a piece of furniture that draws family and friends together in the rituals of eating, drinking, and socialising. In the form of the object-in-space, it is a placemaker par excellence, and depending on its design, can be both a simple surface to activate and a sculptural element on its own. I have designed the Shift_Leg Table in this spirit. The design of the table begins with a simple premise. How can the positioning of a dining table’s legs do two things: 1. Change the perception of the form and stability of a table. 2. Change the way in which people interact through subtle shifts in chair location. Neil Denari is director of Neil M. Denari Architects NMD and professor for architecture and urban development at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His academic research concentrates on urban morphology, utopias, and living tectonics. In 1980 he graduated as Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston and in 1982 as Master of Architecture from Harvard University. One of the many awards he received is an AIA Gold Medal from 2011. Denari’s works have been on view in numerous exhibitions and are part of public collections in many museums around the globe.
