Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai (1760-1849) - Starožitnosti - Část 1

Tokaido Ejiri Tago-no-ura ryakuzu (Sketch of the Tago Bay at Eijiri on the Tôkaidô), from the series: “Fugaku sanjurokkei” (Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji), nishiki-e, signed: zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (also translated as: saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu, the signature is to the right of the series and picture title cartouche, publisher: no publisher’s seal (Nishimura Yohachi is generally accepted as the publisher). The sheet made available to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, as a photograph largely corresponds to the prints in the Art Institute of Chicago, no. 1925.3279 and the MAK, Vienna, no. KI 11022. In his opinion, it was printed from the original woodblocks. The good quality of the impression suggests an early printing state. The outlines were printed in blue. The lower boat hulls and beach were printed in dark blue, which is the case with early prints. It is trimmed in the lower left corner. The right side is fully preserved. The colours are vivid and in good condition. It has been backed, a vertical centrefold has been stabilised with adhesive tape on the reverse. A print of the outline plate (blue print) is preserved in the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg (no. IE1896.3). Such prints have survived for several motifs in the series. In later prints, the lines of the two small hills to the right of Mount Fuji have become faint and lines of the waves are irregular or appear squashed, 24.2 x 36.6 cm, mounted, (CT)
