Gabon. Early 20th century. 40 cm. These figures were used by the'nganga Kosi', ritual specialist. The polychrome, the coiffure and solemn facial expressions reflect the Punu, Tsogho and Loumbo esthetic standards. This figure's beauty was considered a baited'trap' for wrongdoers by the Kosi. (VJ)
