Iran, c. 207 x 136 cm, 19th century. A biblical pictorial carpet from the famous Mohtashem manufactory with scenes from the life of the prophet Joseph. The Joseph narrative marks the transition from the stories of the ancestors in Genesis to the history of Israel in the book of Exodus. The biblical story of Joseph is also largely incorporated in the Qur’an, where the entire twelfth surah is dedicated to him. The numerous rhymes in the light-coloured cartouches around the central field tell his life story and describe his legendary beauty. In Persian culture, Joseph is still popular today.
