Georgius Johannes Jacobus van Os

Georgius Johannes Jacobus van Os - Obrazy 19. století

(The Hague 1781–1861 Paris)
Still Life with Flowers and a Bird’s Nest, signed GJJ van Os, oil on canvas, 48 x 36 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection.

Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os was the son and pupil of the still life painter Jan van Os. Like his father, he was influenced by the works of Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) and inherited the tradition of still life and flower painting in the Netherlands. He moved to Paris in 1812 where he worked for the Sèvres porcelain factory. In the same year, he won a Paris Salon Gold medal for one of his paintings. He then worked variously in Amsterdam, The Hague and Paris. In 1826 he settled permanently in Paris but travelled regularly to Haarlem. He was also a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. Van Os established a reputation surpassing that of his father. He excelled at rendering flower compositions and exotic horticultural novelties.

In the present lot the painter arranged a variety of flowers in a vase, such as calina acculis, peonies, lilies and hibiscus, with a bird’s nest on a marble ledge. It is a classical and beautiful example of the artist’s representations of flowers.
