Born in Tilburg in 1756, Cornelis van Spaendonck moved to Paris by the age of seventeen to follow his older brother, the still life painter Gerardus van Spaendonck. There he studied and worked with him. He joined the Sèvres porcelain factory as a flower painter, eventually becoming Director from 1785-1800.
In 1789 he was made member of the Académie des beaux-arts which allowed him the participate in the Salon. He exhibited there until 1833 and throughout his live elsewhere.
In this composition, flowers such as Parrot tulips, Roses, Lilac and others are placed in a basket that rests on a marble ledge. The painting is dated 1817 and signed with the French version of his name, Corneille.
