Bernstorff Castle is located north of Copenhagen in the municipality of Gentofte on the Danish island of Zealand.
In 1752, the Danish King Frederick V transferred the area on which Bernstorff Castle now stands to his foreign minister Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff as a summer residence.
In 1842, it was acquired by King Christian VIII. After extensive renovations by Jorgen Hansen Koch, the king lived in the castle for several weeks a year as his summer residence.
From 1854 onwards, the castle experienced its golden age with King Christian IX. During his long reign, from 1863 to 1906, it became the summer residence of the royal couple and the destination of princely guests, such as King Edward VII of Great Britain, King George I of Greece, Czar Alexander II and Emperors William I and William II.
