Dragon soumak,
East Caucasus, c. 377 x 172 cm, first half of the 19th century, a very early example of dragon soumak with archaic, well-proportioned pattern design and striking colours; also worth mentioning besides its extraordinarily long format is the extremely rare main border; the narrow border with “running dog” – which is a staple feature in later pieces – is missing here to advantageous effect, several small repairs due to age, nevertheless in good overall condition. (MA)
