The first European carpets were knotted in Spain and date back to the 12th century: they were initially known as so-called coat-of-arms’ carpets; other carpets were later also copied, such as the pomegranate, Holbein and – in the 17th century – Lotto carpets. The present piece from the above-mentioned series is entirely preserved, its field pattern consists of dotted eyes, grids and birds, a very similar carpet was published in “Teppiche, Tradition und Kunst in Orient und Okzident” (p. 329), manufactured in symmetrical knots with very large border, very low pile in parts, with several repairs.
