Iran, c. 385 x 278 cm, about 1900. An important, especially large pictorial carpet depicting the nineteenth Chicago World’s Fair, held in 1893 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. On a central family tree, famous figures are lined up in ascending order. The first one is Christopher Columbus, among the others are Alexander III, Queen Victoria, William II and Abdulhamid Khan. The lower part of the carpet depicts the exhibition area, the lower left corner the Gokstad Viking ship, the contribution of Norway. The image of another sensation of the exhibition features at the top of the tree, the 75 meter high Ferris wheel. Carpets of this type were commissioned around 1900 by aristocratic families of the Middle East. A similar item is preserved in the Carpet Museum in Tehran. Manufactured in cork wool with c. 500,000 knots/sqm, in good condition. (VP)
