Hiroshige (1797-1858) Fuchu, Abekawa,
(Fuchu Station on the Abe River), sheet 20 from the series: "Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no uchi" (Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road, also called the Great Tokdaido), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeido), censor's seal kiwame (not visible here because the left margin has been trimmed), dated c. 1833-34 (Tenpo 4-5). The present sheet looks like a slightly later version of the sheet no. 061C003-020 from Tokyo Metro Library. The middle ridge of the front mountain displays a similar bright spot, the white hoop in the middle ridge in the background is recognisable, likewise a comparable spot on the shoulder of the man on the far left of the picture, both sheets show a similar bokashi, visible centrefold, the latter slightly brownish, more markedly on the left and right margins, the lower margin slightly trimmed, the upper margin untrimmed, 24.5 x 35.2 cm, (CT)
