Jean-Baptiste Huet
(1745–1811) A young woman and young shepherd in a landscape: “Le Matin”, “L’Après Midi”, two allegories from the series „The Four Times of the Day,” red and black chalk on laid paper, watermark “Large escutcheon”, each 23 x 32,5 cm (depiction), 24,5 x 33,5 cm (dimensions of sheet), browned, stained, mounted, framed, (2), (Sch)
Provenance:
Private property, Italy.
The present two drawings are original designs by Jean-Baptiste Huet for a series comprising “Allegories of the four times of the day”, which Gilles Demarteau (1722–1776) reproduced as lithographs. The four drawings are said to have belonged to the property of the daughter of the poet Jonkheer Willem van Haren (1710–1768). A complete series of the lithographs is kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. Nr. 2008. 183–186). For the prints by Demarteau, see: Leopold de Leymarie, L’oeuvre de Gilles Demarteau l’ainé graveur du Roi, Paris 1896, Cat. Nos. 546 and 548.
We are grateful to Alastair Laing, who identified the attribution to Jean-Baptiste Huet by means of high-resolution digital photographs.
