Private Collection, Italy.
Nicola Forcella travelled to Egypt in the late 1880s and set up a studio in Cairo, where he developed a keen interest for the depiction of everyday Egyptian life. Forcella painted the present lot in 1892. It depicts a bustling scene of street vendors. A man serves freshly baked Egyptian flat bread known as aish baladi whilst a group of four men sit nonchalantly. Various merchandise has been laid out for the day. The stalls offer local produce, including fruits and vegetables. A man seated on a wooden base smokes a hookah pipe. Forcella taught in the Khedival Art School and remained in Cairo for much of his life. He exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français in Cairo. He was awarded the Imperial Order of the Medjidie.
