Workshop of Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael

Workshop of Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael - Obrazy starých mistrů I

(Urbino 1483–1520 Rome)
The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist,
oil on panel, 29.8 x 24.9 cm, framed

Provenance:
Dal Pozzo family (according to a wax seal on the reverse);
Private collection, Germany;
where acquired by the present owner

The present painting, with some slight variations, relates to what is generally accepted as Giulio Romano’s earliest surviving work, the so-called Madonnina in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. INV 422), usually dated to circa 1515. The composition re-works in an original and distinctive way, that of Raphael’s Madonna della Sedia. A drawing by Giulio Romano also relates to the present painting (Louvre, Paris, inv. no. INV 3607).

The present work is the same size as the painting in the Louvre, and it appears that the internal dimensions, including the figures, are similar. It has been suggested that this work was made either from the same cartonetto or from a tracing of the Louvre painting.

By 1518, or perhaps a little earlier, Giulio Romano operated his own subsidiary studio within Raphael’s larger organisation, and maybe already accepted smaller independent commissions, often adapting ideas by Raphael.
