A Plague Amulet (‘Pestsegen’) from Salzburg,

In the vernacular, pendants featuring depictions or relics of the plague saints in small recesses were also called ‘Pestsegen’ (lit. plague blessings). The present exceptionally large Pestsegen, crafted in the shape of an imperial double-headed eagle, is particularly rare. The city of Salzburg was repeatedly struck by the plague until the 18th century and became a centre for the production of such amulets. Wild goat horns were believed to possess healing properties and glazed relics were intended to enhance their protective effect.
