The international artist Kenzo Takada, known as KENZO, was born near Himeji in Hyögo Prefecture in 1939 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, in 2020. His father was an innkeeper and ran a teahouse in Mikeji. Kenzo grew up surrounded by geishas who worked there and with his six siblings. In 1958, he became the first male student at Buknka Gaukin, one of the most prestigious fashion schools in Tokyo. From 1965 onwards, he lived in Paris. in 1970, to great acclaim, he became the first Japanese designer to present a fashion show in Paris. In 1971, his collection was shown in New York City and Japan, from 1972 large fashion shows followed; from 1976 onwards, first KENZO Botique in Paris; 1978, 1979: shows in circus tents; 1983: TAKADA extended his creations to men's fashion and children's fashion; 1991: first men's perfume; 1993: TAKADA sold the brand KENZO for around 70 million euros to the French luxury group LVMH, but remained with the company as its chief designer. In 1999, TAKADA announced his retirement from the fashion world at the age of 60. 2004: he worked again as a designer; 2006: fashion accessories; 2007: designer for Baccarat, Royal Limogenes, Tai Ping Carpets and Patisserie Lenotre products. 2010: he started painting; 2011: designed the interior of a hotel in Mauritius; 2012: involved in the design of 2 catamarans with a Monaco yacht manufacturer, designed a high-priced jewellery collection with floral motifs for the Parisian jeweller 10 Royale by KENZO TAKADA.
