In 1799 Joseph Rebell entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and studied architecture with Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf of Hohenberg and Vinzenz Fischer. In 1804 he became a student of the landscape painters Friedrich August Brand and Laurenz Janscha. At the same time he took private lessons with the landscape artist Michael Wutky who had spent many years in Italy and aroused the enthusiasm in his young pupil for the south.
In 1810 Rebel traveled to Milan and made views of the lakes in Upper Italy, presumably on the commission of the editor Domenico Artaria, who was his neighbor on Kohlmarkt in Vienna. From exchanged letters, we learn that Rebell apparently made primarily preliminary drawings for graphic reproduction. In 1810 Rebell executed watercolours in the surrounding of the lakes Lugano und Como; in 1811 he focused more on the lakes Lugano and Como. After a short sojourn in Rome, Rebell settled in Naples in 1813 and achieved international acclaim for his views of the Gulf of Naples, Ischia, Capri, Amalfi and Sorrent (cf. exh. cat.
