France, c. height 331 x width 187 cm, early 17th century. A museum-quality weave with a very high silk proportion and processed gold threads. The depiction of the young King David among the three philosophers captivates its viewers through its superb plasticity. It can be attributed to the Parisian workshop of Marc de Coman and Francois de La Planche. The pattern was supplied by Henri Delambert. A similar piece is preserved at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. In clean overall condition, with supplemented borders at both ends and some professional restorations. The lower right galloon features is a lily, the complementary mark of the master workshop was probably lost during a former restoration. (VP)
