An Ancient Sirige Mask imina na, wara, dannu
Mali, 18th-19th century, 105 cm high. These long Sirige masks (literally storied house) are used, once a decade, during dances during the funeral ceremony of deceased ancestors. Performed during a good harvest, it takes place after the burial as a means to guide the deceased's nyama out of the village and into the realm of spirits. Preceded by the Kanaga mask, the Sirige masquerade portrays the origin myth of the creation of earth and life.
